I am Dr Paul Ferguson, an independent AI consultant and advisor based in Dublin, Ireland. I have spent the last 20+ years working on applied AI: in research centres, in large corporate R&D teams, and now as an independent consultant and advisor.
The common thread has been working at both the strategic and practical level: helping organisations make sound decisions about AI, and then building the things that actually deliver.

My background
Professional journey
Academic foundation
My journey in technology began with a BSc in computer applications, specialising in software engineering, followed by a PhD in information retrieval with cross-overs into machine learning and NLP.
Bridging academia & industry
Following my PhD, I worked as a post-doctoral researcher in a number of research centres, collaborating closely with industry on applied AI research for companies ranging from innovative start-ups to tech giants like Samsung. This gave me a solid grounding in taking AI research from idea to working prototype, and in working effectively with industry partners to deliver practical value.
Corporate R&D: scaling AI solutions
Transitioning to industry, I worked in R&D, machine learning, and data science roles at large multinational companies across consumer electronics, telecommunications, and healthcare, building and leading teams delivering AI products and systems at scale.
Leadership in healthcare AI
As Director of Data Science for UnitedHealth Group (a Fortune 5 company), I led AI and machine learning initiatives at scale across a global healthcare organisation: building teams, setting technical direction, and delivering solutions with real impact on patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
Current focus: AI consulting
Now, as the founder of Clearlead AI Consulting, I work with organisations on the full picture: helping leadership teams develop clear AI strategies and evaluate investments, advising boards, and designing and building the solutions that deliver. My experience across industries and company sizes has given me a clear sense of where AI genuinely adds value and where it does not.
